If you have one of the Canon mirrorless cameras that takes this battery type (LP-E17) you know you’ll need extra batteries, much more so than DSLRs that use it.The most important question on my mind, and probably everyone else, is… Does it actually work? Does it decode? I can only speak for what it did in my Canon R8 and T6i. YES. It worked just fine in those two cameras.See my attached photo for what the R8 camera displayed in the menu under “Battery Info” when I used the LP-E17HF. It basically thinks it’s a Canon LP-E17 battery. At first I wondered why it didn’t include the “HF” part, but after a bit of research, it seems that’s just Kastar’s naming convention. Canon doesn’t have a LP-E17HF.It’s performance has been on-par with my OEM battery. Although I never took it from fully-charged to 0%, there was no NOTICEABLE difference in how quickly the battery drained from full to ~1/2 on the three occasions I’ve used it with my R8. For roughly half a charge it gave ~2 hours of use, lots of reviewing/deleting photos on the fly, and 130-175 photos + 6-10 short clips averaging 30 seconds on those occasions (WiFi Off and the default power-saving settings).If you are thinking that doesn’t sound like a lot of pictures and time, you’d be right. But that’s not the battery, that’s the R8. It just uses a lot of power and the LP-E17 isn’t very big. What’s important to me was that this battery seemed to work as well as the OEM at less than 1/2 the price (closer to 1/3rd [36%] of OEM price).There’s not much to dislike about this particular battery from Kastar. The plastic case on it feels just about as high quality/durable as the OEM and it charges on the OEM charger. I will add that Kastar might be a 3rd-party manufacturer of batteries for cameras and other electronics, but they are not a no-name brand that just popped up in the last 6 months to a year. They’ve been around for several years and I have multiple batteries from them for several other cameras and on-camera lights which have all given me good service. I’ve never had to throw one away yet.Bottom line IMHO, for the average amateur like me this serves as an inexpensive, but equally-well performing backup battery to your OEM.
